What was working labor like in the west? (old west)?

Also what role did the mines play? And how did the mining towns play in the labor system back then???

Interesting question. I've also wondered about this myself. When I was young, westerns depicting the "old west" were popular. Roy Rogers, The Lone Ranger, Gene Autry, Gunsmoke, Hopalong Cassidy, John Wayne, and a few more plus Rin Tin Tin and Lassie. They don't make westerns like that anymore. I imagine that it would have been a more simple life. Everyone owned horses, donkeys or mules, which was the mode of transportation in the old west. Mustangs ran wild on the land, and were captured and broke for riding. Cowboys would ride from town to town looking for piece work of any kind to buy needed supplies, which they mostly carried in their saddle bags. Some had pack animals they used to transport larger items or additional mining supplies. Food was cooked over an open fire, and was usually some sort of animal that was killed and skinned. Berries, fruit, and greens grew wild and ripe for the picking. Some who were lucky, found work on a ranch for room and board, usually sleeping in bunk houses with other ranch hands. If the work ran out, they would ride out in search of another town or ranch. The trails were well ridden and not difficult to find. Ranchers moved cattle along these trails to towns where there were railroads to move beef to market. Women where mostly the homemakers and stayed put to take care of family, and keep the home in order while the man was out earning the money.

Traditionally, when one thinks of the expansion of the American West, the event most likely to come to mind is the California Gold Rush of 1849. While that profitable discovery did boost California's population by 80,000 eager prospectors, there remained an awful lot of land between the Pacific Coast and, say, St. Louis, Missouri. "Why mention St. Louis?" you might be asking. Because in actuality the young United States started exploring the vast land mass to the west from that very point and almost fifty years before those gold nuggets started hitting the pan in California.

The mines were the main source of employment in the mining towns of California, Nevada, and Arizona. Gold mining in the west was big and many found great wealth in these mines. Covered wagons made their way from the East to the West along famous trails like The Old Spanish Trail, Santa Fe Trail, Oregon Trail, Pony Express Route hoping to stake out their claims finding gold nuggets. When the gold ran out, the towns were abandoned and left as "Ghost Towns", where many remain today.

Thank you for this thought inspiring question.

Take care my friend.
